Journal Assignment:  How the New York Times conducts its polls

The New York Times gives detailed information on how it conducts its polls.  Read about how they conducted a recent poll on texting while driving at

or read the pdf version posted on Blackboard under Handouts, Class 22.

The pollsters seem to have gone to a lot of trouble when collecting their data, involving land lines, cell phones, multiple callbacks, designating one adult at random, weighting by household size and number of phone lines, etc. etc.  See paragraphs 2, 3, and 4.  Pick a few of the things they did, and explain why you think they did them and specifically how it might bias results if they did not.

We will discuss the results of the poll on texting while driving in class on Thursday.
